Straight Leg

Are we saying goodbye to the ultra-skinny leg and welcoming in a new legion denim leaders? I'm not sure if we're going that far, but I love the inspiration below on how to wear a straighter leg. Enjoy!

Je ne sais quoi

Jacket: Marni
Skirt: Marni
Top: Maiyet
Necklace, bracelet, ring set: Maison Martin Margiela

I'm always on the hunt for pieces that have a certain je ne sais quoi to them. When I see those pieces, I instinctively know, you know? It must be my weird connection to fashion... Or maybe I'm just crazy and that's what I'm sensing! In any case all these pieces have me drooling as I find there is something unique, but not obvious about each of them.

Dreaming of Pastels...

All Spring 2014 RTW: Prabal Gurung, Chanel, Peter Pilotto, Rebecca Taylor
Pastels are a huge trend for Spring/Summer 2014. Mint, the trendiest colour from a few seasons back now has to share the stage with its other pastel pals.
Wondering how to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe? Why not give it a try in the form of pointy-toe pumps? Manolo Blahnik has more than a few gorgeous options if you don't mind spending upwards of $600.00.  However, spending a lot on a trend that may not outlast your soles might not be the most sensible decision. Hence the option of these beautiful pastel pumps from Nine West that will keep you on trend without emptying your pockets!

Hi | Low

What girl wouldn't want every item in her closet to be a coveted designer piece? Maybe there are people who wouldn't lust for that kind of wardrobe, but if it were offered, I'm sure it wouldn't be turned down either.

The hi-low concept is one I live by, if by no other choice. But when you get a great result, it's nice to know you didn't break the bank to achieve it.
Tank top: Tibi
Sunglasses: Aldo
Cuff: Forever21
Boyfriend jeans: Joe Fresh
Mules: Zara

The Hi's of the outfit are the python Proenza Schouler clutch found at the Room at TheBay.com and the Tibi tank top found on ELuxe.ca. The clutch is a rich blue and definitely the element of the outfit that pops! Great quality and a classic style are important when investing in a bag.  This clutch offers both, and in an ultra-bold colour that stands out but isn't too trendy to find it collecting dust by next year.  I need not say too much about the striped tank, other than the sparkles take this wardrobe basic up a couple notches.  Wear it with denim shorts or a flared skirt. Versatility for the win!

I'm usually an ambassador of investing in shoes as well as bags, but in this case, Zara knocks the mule trend out of the park with these satin babies! And if the trend doesn't make it to next summer, you can take comfort in the fact you didn't spend all your pennies.
While boyfriend jeans are here to stay, no need to spend too much dough.  Joe Fresh has got you covered and will leave you with plenty to spend on other trendy items like these cat-eye sunglasses from Aldo and the caged cuff from Forever21.
Happy Shopping :D

H&M Spring 2014 Collection

The H&M Spring 2014 Collection is in stores today, so of course I ran to the Toronto Eaton Centre to check it out. Below are a few of the items I have chosen as my favourites due to their wearabilty and the extra details that make them pretty kick ass without being over the top.
These suede skinny pants fit like a dream!
These rich leather and metal belts will instantly add a rocker-chic element to your outfit!
I don't think anybody could argue that this tassel embellished blazer is boring!
These shirts are perfect for the Summer! Even if it feels like it's a million years away...
This shirt transforms from flamenco-chic with a detachable ruffle collar to a gorgeous basic shirt with double cuff sleeves!
A fabulous non-basic basic.
Who doesn't need one of these in their closet??
Get your Isabel Marant on with this ruffle skort!
Perfect for day to day or on the beach!
I would have no use for a little bag like this but it was so cute. That's reason enough...right?

I had to go with the suede pants and the animal print t-shirt. I wanted to channel my inner Emmanuelle Alt and totally hit the mark with those two items!

Channeling my inner Emmanuelle

Sandals: Aldo
Suede Pants, Top & Sunglasses: H&M Spring 2014 (In Stores Now)
Belt: Zara

Without a doubt, Emmanuelle Alt is one of my biggest fashion icons and someone whose style I often try to emulate.  When I went into H&M yesterday to check out the launch of the Spring 2014 collection, a few pieces immediately reminded of her zebra striped Balmain t-shirt and leather pants that I've spotted her wearing a couple times.  Since seeing her rock this outfit, I have kept my eye open for a top that was similar, and the one above, by H&M definitely did the trick.  The suede pants are really sexy, super chic and fit wonderfully.  I have a couple pairs of leather pants in my closet already, but I think the suede will make a lovely addition!

One Skirt | Three Ways

The little black leather skirt
Hit the Town:
Sandals: Zara
Bracelet: Saint Laurent
Casual Cocktails:
Sweater: Rag & Bone
Bracelet: Saint Laurent
Girls Night Out
Sweater: H&M
Earrings: Vita Fede
Slingback pumps: Oscar De La Renta

A black leather skirt is a hugely versatile and classic staple to have in your closet. The one featured is by Isabel Marant and costs a pretty penny. I, however, found mine at Value Village and it looks really similar.  If you're not familiar with VV, get familiar. It's a second hand shop and I think I bought it for about 8 bucks! Regardless of whether or not you spend a ton of money, a leather skirt may be a hefty investment, but a good investment will always pay you back in the end.

Get the Look for Less: Alexander McQueen Vs. Zara

These skirts are very similar in style and function. While the one by Alexander McQueen adds extra interest with a lower slung belt, the skirt from Zara has a thicker belt with a more substantial buckle that is on trend for this season. For a sexier look, pair either with a form fitting top in a black or khaki green that emulates neutral, safari colours. Or take them to the office by pairing with a classic oxford shirt!

Thwarting the Polar Vortex

So this crazy weather hasn't gotten any better. Whenever there is a day or two of relief with temperatures of -5 and up (yes I consider -5 to be more than tolerable), it seems to dip right back down. When going out and about, I'm finding it difficult to look put together while staying warm and recognizing I'm choosing warmth over fashion. I looked to style websites to see if they offered any ideas on how to look cute and stylish while simultaneously keeping warm. I did find a ton of suggestions, but we either have two different definitions of freezing or they are totally delusional! They show examples of stylish trendsetters, layered up, but most outfits I wouldn't dare to don unless I was looking to get frostbite. Sheer pantyhose, oxfords, fingerless gloves and unzipped coats look cool but will have you feeling cold!

I pressed on and found some realistic examples to follow when you don't want to subject your favourite shoes to snow and keep your limbs warm!

Exhibit A:
When it's cold and wet out, the pumps have no place in the snow. When wearing a bulkier, waterproof boot, keep your bottom half simple by wearing a black skinny jean so you elongate the leg as much as possible, without looking frumpy. Her toes don't look like they will be wet or cold any time soon!

When it's just freezing outside and you know you wont be running through slush, the most important things are the little things! Add gloves, a hat, and a scarf. However, your saving grace is the thing you probably underestimate and overlook: Long underwear! Wool tights or thermal long underwear for your top and bottom are the perfect base for laying. You may look like cat woman under your clothes but at least you'll stay nice and toasty. Here are some ideas on how to layer and keep warm, yet maintain a stylish appearance.

Exhibit B:
Slap a hat and some gloves on her, zip up her coat and she is good to go! Loose pants allow long thermal underwear to fit nicely underneath without feeling uncomfortable. You can find thermal long underwear at sport shops since winter sports require extra warmth.

Exhibit C:
She may be missing her coat, but an oversized boyfriend coat would fit nicely over her outfit and still go with the aesthetic of the look. Belting a chunky sweater adds shape so it doesn't look frumpy, and the ankle-grazing skirt is like wearing a blanket that allows for a lot of long underwear layering if you should feel inclined!

Exhibit D:
Here we have a great example of 'I'm probably freezing but I'll sacrifice for the photo.' But I am not deterred! Button up her coat and add a warm pair of gloves and she is good to be outside for more than a minute or two! Layering a shirt with a long sweater is the perfect solution to keeping your tush warm. Her straight leg jeans are loose enough to comfortably fit the cold-inducing-long underwear. She looks pretty chic to me!

The cold is here to stay for now, and while it is, so is my style. Take that polar vortex!

Get the Look for Less: Isabel Marant vs. Zara

Both of these sparkly, cutout jackets are perfect for layering over dresses, or if it's a casual look you're going for, over a white t-shirt, boyfriend jeans and heeled sandals. Sparkly jackets are an unexpected addition to simple outfits that pack an extra punch! You might ask yourself, ''How many times could I actually wear a sparkly, cutout jacket like this?'' The answer: More times than you think! Below are some examples to inspire chic outfit ideas and prove that a sparkly jacket can actually be quite versatile!

Best of NYFW

New York Fashion Week is over and it's on to London.  Here are my top collections from NYFW:

Prabal Gurung
I'm a huge sucker for thick, chunky knits and Prabal Gurung doesn't disappoint. After experiencing the polar vortex with all its might, warm sweaters along with ankle grazing coats are definitely on my shopping list for next the fall/winter season (all the while praying it won't be as cold next year).  However, for the start of fall, I'm so excited for flowy fabrics, ankle length trousers and gorgeous wrap tops and blazers. Gurung seriously mastered the cozy, chic and sexy look. This collection is what dreams are made of.

 Narciso Rodriguez
The first thing about this collection that caught my eye were the shoes. The shape and silhouette are fantastic and the nude pair on the left are so dreamy! I'm loving the trousers that are a slim fit but not tight and extra long so that they give the illusion of the leg being longer than they are! I definitely don't want to leave out another aspect of the collection that brings it all together, which is the colour palette. The metals and neutrals are totally gorgeous and I love the linear theme of the collection. Truly perfection!

Theory
Well, if you haven't heard by now, Theyskens' Theory is no more.  But fear not. Oliver Theyskens has been the artistic director over the entire Theory brand and the consolidation of Theyskens' Theory into Theory has produced some major results. With this collection, we can see the classic look of Theory injected with bits of personality Theyskens' Theory is known for. Theory has been known for great basics, and Theyskens has still managed to capture that aesthetic while simultaneously adding a bit more personality into the clothes. I love the flutter and textures of the fabrics and the richness of the colours that make this collection anything but basic.
